Wine trips

June 2011: diversified Apulia

Apulia offers many interesting regions and culinary delicacies.

The wines in Apulia are more and more seen on the wine cards in our restaurants, therefore we go on a trip to the south of Italy to a have a look around.

Our journey starts in Vieste – the city on the famous heel of Italy. In that Region “the Gargano” you can find only little viniculture and therefore seldomely some valuable drops. While ordering wine in a restaurant we selected products from the DOC region Castel del Monte. There you can fine great wine, fine aromatic white- and red wine. We are mostly delighted by the light white wine Bombino Bianco and by the regionally well known spicy Uva di Troia.

Vieste is primarily well known to the surfers and culinary definitely worth a journey. In the angled alleyways one can find really great restaurants and bars. Very recommendable is the restaurant Capriccio directly at the port where the little sailing boats pilot into the harbour. Food from the finest and convenient wine prices. Here you will become a wine taster!

We carry on our journey after a few days further into the land of the trullis (stone houses) around of Alberobello. This small town officially nominated 1996  to a world cultural herita, not only offers historical attractions but also culinary highlights. We are simply stunned by the weekly farmers market with a vast assortment on antipasti, olives, vegetables, cheese,  sausages and meat from the region

We stop for a bit to eat at the Ristorante La Cantina – what they offer us there delights us allot. Simple but flavourful an adventure, is the combination that they offer you. If you order antipasti, you get 10 different small plates with delicacies out of  the region.
We enjoy a bottle of Primitivo die Manduria. A red wine with an awesome touch of natural sweetness and acidity. White wine is comes from the neighbour region, DOC Locorotondo.

In Martina Franca - one of the white cities of the region – we get to know a regional speciality. The "Fornello di Murgia".
In this case it's all about a butcher shop , where you can choose your meat that is grilled in on an open fireplaces,  directly at the counter. Afterwards you get the meat of your choice served with a bottle of table wine.

Our last station leads us to the region around Slice Selentino, to the main winegrowing region of Apulia. Here you can see what active viniculture means. Above all the region around Brindisi offers exceptional qualities on the table on wine lovers.

Even the Pioneer from the Toscana Marchese Antinori  has come to this area to plant his vineyards named Tormaresca and Masseria Maime.  Tormaresca Chardonnay IGT, Tormaresca Neprica Puglia IGT, Torcicoda Primitivo IGT, Bocca di Lupo Castel del Monte DOC and Masseria Maime Salento IGT are specially grown and harvested here, which makes the exceptional quality.

The Region is characterized by the olive fields and viniculture. The grape variety Chardonnay, Malvasia bianca, Negroamaro, und Aleatico are to be found here.
